When asked if Congress should "open the books" and share the names of all the members who are responsible for $7 million in sexual harassment lawsuits paid, Conyers said, "My answer is a strong, unequivocal, yes".

"Rep. Conyers slid his hand up my skirt and rubbed my thighs while I was sitting next to him in the front row of a church", Grubbs said.

Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed, confirmed that the lawmaker meant retiring effective immediately.

Conyers on Tuesday endorsed his son, John Conyers III, for the seat.

Democratic Rep. John Conyers will reportedly not seek re-election after multiple women claimed he sexually harassed them including a former staffer, according to a new report released Tuesday.

Shortly after the announcement, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, took to the House floor to read a statement from Conyers. Such behavior "was a regular part of life while working in the office of Rep. Conyers", she said. "It will be Congressman John Conyers who decides what it is he is going to do". The issue had divided members of his party, especially those in the Congressional Black Caucus, and Pelosi, too, had struggled, calling Conyers an "icon" before pressing days later for him to go. "This too shall pass", he said, speaking on the Mildred Gaddis Show.

Since the allegations, both House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Paul Ryan have called for Conyers to resign.

Conyers flew home to his district last week and checked into the hospital for what a family consultant said was stress. "And I want to be able to talk about it and fix the system without having people say 'Blake, you benefited from the system". Until Tuesday, he was the longest-serving current member of Congress.

Politicians and community leaders Monday demanded the end of the calls for Congressman John Conyers Jr.to resign amid accusations of sexual harassment by former staffers.

"There can be no tolerance for behavior that subjects women to the kind of conduct that has been alleged", said Jerrold Nadler, who replaced Conyers in his leadership role on the House Judiciary Committee.

One of them, Marion Brown, last week broke a non-disclosure agreement that she signed after receiving a settlement, reported to be $27,000, when she left her job in Conyers's office, saying she "felt compelled" to speak out.

Conyers is one of four sitting U.S. lawmakers hit by allegations of sexual misconduct in the wake of the claims targeting movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, which triggered a torrent of accusations against powerful figures in the worlds of entertainment, media and politics.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all the citizens in the country what federal legislatures are doing or not doing - and any cost that may have incurred as a result of that", Conyers said. The committee's website lists Conyers still as a member.
