Instagram updating profiles with new Stories features, Archive and Highlights

Instagram launches biggest change to profiles in years, adding new stories and archive features Introducing Stories Highlights and Stories Archive – Instagram

Video obtained by The Next Web also reveals that Instagram may be testing a GIF feature that lets users search for and place GIFs in their stories and posts, sourcing the GIF's via Giphy.

The site has launched two new features: Stories Highlights and Stories Archive. If you've recorded a particularly noteworthy story and you don't want it to disappear after 24 hours, you can now group it with other stories in a Highlight that is then featured on your profile. Then select clips from your archived stories, choose a thumbnail for your story, and give it a name (for example, "puppers" from the previous example).

Instagram has rolled out two new features that will allow your Stories to live on long past the 24-hour mark.

Both the Stories Highlights and Stories Archive are rolling out now as part of the newest update to the Instagram app, which is also being released today.

Unlike a traditional Story, highlights will remain on your profile until you remove them.

Thank goodness, because this is what Instagram Stories didn't have that Snapchat does.

To look at your archive, tap the Archive icon on your profile page - it looks like a clock.

And for good reason - part of the company's reasoning behind Stories in the first place (besides competing with Snapchat, that is) was that users were so exacting about what was on their profile that they weren't posting almost as often as Instagram wanted. To add a profile highlight, you tap the circle on the top left of your profile page. Previously, messages posted to Stories disappeared forever after a day.

The company, although not completely abandoning the ephemeral content idea, is now adopting a Stories Archive - a section of the Instagram app that files away previous stories for your reminiscing. Using the menu, you can add old Stories to your current one as a #ThrowbackThursday type of thing or you can share it as a regular post. To edit or delete a highlight, press and hold its icon. But there are more substantial changes than that too, and the features together offer major changes to the way that the recently introduced stories feature works.

Only you can see your archived stories, and you can choose to turn off auto-archiving at any time in your profile settings.

The Archive is private, so only the user can view their own stuff while it's in there.
