Evacuations in California as wildfires flare out of control

The Thomas Fire in California has grown to over 26,000 acres with 0% perimeter containment according to a tweet from the Ventura County Fire Department's verified Twitter account Evacuations in California as wildfires flare out of control

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes north of Los Angeles as a fast-moving wildfire rips through the area.

The blaze was being driven by what the National Weather Service called "potentially the strongest and longest duration" Santa Ana wind event of the current season.

Audio will be available later today.

Fire officials say the fire broke out Monday east of Santa Paula, which is about 60 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Firefighters were battling a wind-whipped brush fire in southern California on Tuesday that has left at least one person dead and destroyed more than 150 homes and businesses. Numerous evacuated homes were in that city.

At least two structures have already burned and power outages have been reported across the county.

"Due to the intensity of the fire, crews are having trouble making access and there are multiple reports of structures on fire".

Los Angeles County firefighters will send a strike team to the Malibu area Monday morning, putting five fire engines and about 25 firefighters into the heart of the fire-prone Santa Monica Mountains.

One person was killed in a vehicle crash while trying to evacuate from the fires, Ventura County Fire chief Mark Lorenzen said in a news conference, according to CNN.

Ventura County officials said about 500 firefighters were now battling the blaze, known as the Thomas Fire, and more were being deployed.

However, the rapid spread of the blaze, the cause of which is not yet known, means that the city of Ventura, home to over 100,000 people, will soon feel its effects. More than 7,500 homes are under mandatory evacuation, authorities said in a statement released at 1:50 a.m. local time, which described the fire as "out of control".
