Obama laments lack of US climate leadership in Paris Obama: We need to elect more women because 'men seem to be having problems'

Obama was speaking before a group of some 800 French CEOS, celebrities and public officials at an invitation-only conference in France called the Napoleons, where he lamented the US withdrawal from the Paris climate accord, an agreement he had signed in 2015.

Barack Obama called for more women to be put in positions of power "because men seem to be having some problems these days".

"Not to generalise, but women seem to have a better capacity than men do, partly due to their socialisation", said the 56-year-old Democrat who left office in January.

During the event, Obama reportedly made no mention of his successor Donald Trump at the event, but apparently did take time to hit out at the EU.

Obama gave a speech to business leaders in the French capital on Saturday, describing what he said was the "temporary absence of American leadership on the issue".

Obama also said his daughters tried to teach him the unwritten rules of social media, which includes not following the rules of English grammar, to which Obama staunchly opposed the idea.

Obama arrived at the presidential Elysee Palace at midday on Saturday.

Despite Trump's unwillingness to participate until the agreement is renegotiated, individual American companies - along with USA states and cities - have stepped up their commitment to the deal.

Obama also met former French president Francois Hollande, who hosted the UN's climate conference two years ago, and Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo.

It has been near a year since former President Obama was at the helm of the United States government and leading from behind. "What I would say is Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, all these various platforms are extraordinarily powerful tools, and those tools can be used for good and they tools can be used for ill", he said.
