Mr. Trump's United Nations ambassador, Nikki R. Haley, said in the statement announcing the withdrawal that the declaration contained "numerous provisions that are inconsistent with USA immigration and refugee policies and the Trump administration's immigration principles".

The U.S. officials told the United Nations it would withdraw from a global agreement on the treatment of migrants because it is "inconsistent" with U.S. immigration policies.

In a statement released late on Saturday, the USA mission to the United Nations noted that President Donald Trump made the decision.

The announcement of the USA withdrawal from the pact came just hours before the opening of a global conference on migration scheduled to begin Monday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The United States has made a decision to end participation in the UN process to develop a Global Compact on Migration (GCM). "The global approach in the New York Declaration is simply not compatible with USA sovereignty".

In 2016, after the Obama administration's decision to join the UN's New York Declaration on Refugees, America joined the process of agreement.

'We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country, ' she said.

Following the September 2016 New York Declaration, the General Assembly started to develop this global compact in April 2017.

He added that the U.S. "has the experience and expertise to help ensure that this process leads to a successful outcome".

The Trump White House also has moved to distance itself from some key United Nations agencies over political issues, including Unesco - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - and the United Nations Population Fund, the world's leading provider of family-planning services.

US AMBASSADOR NIKKI HALEY, on decisions over immigration policies.

The US has already pulled out of the United Nations climate change treaty and Unesco, the cultural heritage body, accusing the latter's leadership of an anti-Israeli bias.

According to a report in Foreign Policy, a group of national security advisers met with President Donald Trump last week to discuss sitting out the conference.

In light of these withdrawals and threats, many observers have wondered aloud if Trump's "America First" policy is really an "America Alone" one.

"The role of the United States in this process is critical as it has historically and generously welcomed people from all across the globe and remains home to the largest number of worldwide migrants in the world", a spokesperson for UN General Assembly president Miroslav Lajčák said in a statement.
