Russia Rejects US Call to Cut North Korea Ties

Lavrov Claims US Trying To Provoke North Korean Leadership Russia Accuses US of Trying to Provoke N Korean Leader 'To Fly Off Handle'

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov slammed on Friday US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley's recent remarks regarding North Korea.

Lavrov also further highlighted the deep divisions between Russian Federation and the United States when he accused Washington of seeking a pretext for the destruction of North Korea.

He called Haley's speech on North Korea, which she made at an emergency UN Security Council meeting, "a really bloodthirsty tirade".

"We will do everything to ensure that it [military conflict] doesn't happen and that the problem is solved using exclusively peaceful and political-diplomatic means", he said.

"While condemning Pyongyang's nuclear missile adventurism, we can not but condemn the provocative behavior of our American colleagues", Lavrov said in an interview with Belarusian broadcaster STV.

Lavrov also spoke of having "the impression over the last two months that there is someone in Washington who wants to provoke new actions" by North Korea. Instead, the USA suddenly announced it would be holding the drills in October, then November, then December. This is the first missile launch since the last one carried out by North Korea on September 15.

"China and Russian Federation have a common stance on the Korean Peninsula issue, maintaining contact with each other".

During the subsequent, combative session of the UNSC, Haley called on North Korea's neighbors to do more to enforce sanctions, while Russia's representative Vasily Nebenzia criticised Washington's use of sanctions and military exercises in the region.

"We see the main task in preventing an armed conflict, which will have disastrous consequences, first of all, for the countries that are located in the region - South Korea and Japan, but let's not forget that China and Russian Federation also practically bordering North Korea", Lavrov said.

"They trust Russian Federation, therefore they consider the possibility [of negotiations] only with its participation ... as the guarantor of the talks", Chepa said.
