SAP agreed to use Microsoft's Azure cloud-computing service internally, and said it will highlight that usage to customers shopping for their own cloud services.

Recently announced, Microsoft and leading application management software company SAP have partnered to give enterprise customers a cloud solution that is both expansive in flexibility as well as robust in product support. Microsoft will in turn deploy SAP S/4HANA on Azure to aid the company in running its own finance processes. Both companies agreed 18 months ago to collaborate to combine Microsoft Office 365 into SAP.

Microsoft and SAP plan to document these internal projects and make them available to customers who want to deploy SAP on Azure for guidance purposes.

Chris Pendleton, Principal Program Manager, Microsoft Azure IoT at Microsoft Corp. added, "Cubic Telecom's rich collection of location-based data on Microsoft Azure provides the opportunity to consider a wide range of public and private applications for customers".

"As technology transforms every business and every industry, organizations are looking for the right platforms and trusted partners to help accelerate their digital transformation", said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.

Microsoft now runs a number of legacy SAP finance apps, but will be moving to SAP S/4HANA Finance on Azure. "Azure is a truly global infrastructure that is flexible, scalable and developer-friendly and it has helped us to better serve our customers". The companies have been working to get SAP's software and services running on Azure for several years. They included Coca-Cola, Columbia Sportswear, Coats and Costco.

"We chose to partner with Microsoft because it has expertise in scaling globally with enterprise customers and shares a joint vision with TomTom to make location a fundamental aspect of the cloud", said Anders Truelsen, managing director of BU Licensing at TomTom.

The announcement included customer testimonials from businesses using SAP solutions from Azure. However, he warned that Microsoft and SAP still need to show they can deliver on customer traction, value and success. Parts of the website may not work as expected without them. Microsoft also plans to connect SAP S/4HANA to Azure AI and analytics services for more efficient financial reporting and more powerful decision-making. In addition, SAP said it's migrating 12 or more of its "business critical systems" to Azure.
